If you’ve ever had a headache, been in a car accident, or dealt with dementia, you’ve likely interacted with a neurologist. Neurologists are medical doctors who specialize in problems of the spinal cord, brain and nervous system. In this post, we’ll try to answer the question: what does a neurologist do?

What Does a Neurologist Do?

Have you ever wondered: what does a neurologist do? A neurologist is a medical doctor who diagnoses and treats conditions of the nervous system. This includes the brain, the spinal cord, and the peripheral nerves. Neurologists use a variety of tests and procedures to diagnose and evaluate patients. These may include neurological exams, imaging studies, nerve conduction studies, checking reflexes, electromyography, EEG, checking electrical activity in the brain, etc.

Once a diagnosis has been made, neurologists can provide treatment options, which may include medication, physical therapy, and surgery. In some cases, neurologists also provide long-term care for patients with chronic conditions. This may involve coordinating care with other specialists and providing support to patients and their families.

Field of Neurology – Connected Specializations

Neurologists often work with other healthcare providers to provide care for their patients. This may include primary care physicians, psychiatrists, and physical therapists. Neurologists may also work with researchers to develop new treatments for conditions of the nervous system. Note that neurologist is not the same as neurosurgeon. Neurosurgeons are medical doctors who specialize in surgical procedures involving the nervous system, while neurologists focus on nonsurgical treatment.
